<h3>The opportunity </h3>
<p>The idea to consolidate Ireland’s three paediatric hospitals into one central site dates back to 1993. However, it wasn’t until 2006 that the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (NPHDB) was formed, and quickly set the vision to create one of the finest children’s hospitals in the world. </p>
<p>The NCH project brings together the children’s hospitals at Crumlin and Temple Street, along with paediatric services at Tallaght University Hospital integrated into one organisation to deliver healthcare to Ireland’s children on the campus shared with St James's Hospital in Dublin. The new facility will incorporate, for the first time, 39 clinical specialities across paediatric, adult and maternity care. </p>
<p>The final 160,000 m² facility will feature more than 6,100 rooms across seven storeys, including 380 individual inpatient rooms with an en-suite and a bed for a parent to sleep on. It will also have 93 day beds, 60 critical care beds, and 22 state-of-the-art operating theatres, including specialised theatres for heart surgery, neurosurgery and orthopaedics. Outside, the grounds will spread across four acres of outdoor space with 14 gardens and courtyards, a helipad and 1,000 underground parking spaces. </p>
<p>As well as playing a central role in the provision of acute paediatric healthcare services, NCH will be the primary centre for education, training and research in Ireland. It is envisioned to become a world-class facility that creates a supportive environment for children, young people, their families and the hospital’s staff.<br /></p>

<p>Lexica was commissioned to develop the initial national framework brief for children’s services, drawing together internal best practice models of paediatric care, including space standards and healing environments. Our <a href="https://www.lexica.co.uk/services/healthcare-strategy-and-planning" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Healthcare Strategy + Planning team </a>undertook detailed projections of paediatric care needs in the area to support the tertiary hospital, urgent care satellites and secondary care services nationally.</p>
<p>The idea of a new model of care evolved out of our extensive stakeholder engagement with staff from the three hospitals, families, young people and children who are former or current users of the service, as well as local residents and businesses.</p>
<p>In-depth conversations with everyone revealed the need to include the two satellite centres at Tallaght Hospital and Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown, as well as a number of ambulatory centres to support local communities.</p>
<p>Between 2008 and 2015, we continued to work on behalf of NPHDB to plan the main facility, offering services development, stakeholder management and transition planning. At key points throughout the planning stages, we were commissioned to peer review designs developed for multiple sites.</p>
<p>A member of our team continued to be involved in the implementation of the new joint governance structure for the entity, offering clinical leadership support for the new clinical directorate model.</p>
