<h3>The opportunity </h3>
<p>As part of this ambitious commitment, the healthcare delivery partners – Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, and NHS Kernow CCG – have combined forces to develop a system-wide Green Plan, headlined by a target to deliver net zero operational carbon emissions by the end of the decade.</p><h3>Our approach</h3>
<p>Lexica worked with the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly healthcare partners to develop an area-wide sustainability strategy that builds stakeholder partnerships across Cornwall’s Healthcare system and Cornwall Council to prioritise action for a collaborative roadmap to deliver net zero carbon. </p>
<p>To understand current carbon emissions, Lexica undertook a carbon reporting exercise and highlighted key areas to focus on carbon reduction efforts. Alongside this, an emissions baseline review continues to provide the partnership with a benchmarking tool to review progress against its regional 2030 net zero target.</p>
<p>Lexica also developed a bespoke, SMART roadmap to net zero applicable to all the partnership organisations. Lexica recommended a range of interventions in line with the <a href="https://www.england.nhs.uk/2020/01/greener-nhs-campaign-to-tackle-climate-health-emergency/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Greener NHS Campaign</a>, best practice, and strategic partner ambitions. The roadmap incorporated carbon reduction and cost-saving potentials for the projects identified as well as highlighted the resources and skills required for Cornwall to deliver against its 2030 net zero target.<br /></p>

<h3><strong>Our impact </strong></h3>
<p>Lexica has also been strategically involved in embedding sustainability principles and objectives across the healthcare estate in Cornwall. As part of the site development and reconfiguration, Lexica’s specialist sustainability team developed a net zero carbon design brief and collaborated with the design and contraction teams to embed sustainable design. </p>
<p>Our team also developed Sustainable Design Guidance for Royal Cornwall Hospitals, which will drive standards and best practice and promote building-user comfort and wellbeing whilst minimising the impact on the environment. The trust is looking to employ this approach for all major projects, leading the way in sustainable hospital infrastructure.</p>
