<h3>The opportunity</h3>
<p>Lexica has been working with Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust to provide in-house sustainability support, acting as interim Head of Sustainability across the Trust to ensure that the Trust’s net zero ambitions are supported with high-level, independent capacity to support and challenge this important area for the Trust. This relationship has seen the Trust progress on its journey to net zero, beginning with the update of its Green Plan strategy. </p><h3>Our approach</h3>
<p>Lexica supported Mersey Care with the development of its green plan to incorporate Cheshire and Mersey ICS priorities, as well as reflecting the acquisition of the former North West Boroughs NHS FT in 2021, which increased the number and range of services in an extended geographical footprint. Our net zero experts undertook a bespoke baseline exercise, detailing carbon emissions across the Trust associated with all activities across Scope 1, 2 and 3. </p>
<p>A range of key stakeholders were engaged to inform the Green Plan, with workshops used to guide the priorities and key actions arising from feedback. This ensured the Trust’s and stakeholders’ priorities were aligned, which will contribute to engagement with, and success of, the plan as our team works to support implementation in the future.</p><h3>Our impact </h3>
<p>Lexica is now supporting the Trust’s estates management team and will continue to act as interim Head of Sustainability to deliver the goals outlined in the Green Plan – with key responsibilities such as: </p><ul><li>Development of the Green Plan delivery plans for the core priorities: procurement, waste, travel and transport, communications and HR</li><li>Monitoring and annual reporting of progress against the Green Plan action plan to relevant Board committees and to the Board itself </li><li>Development of business cases and capital investment bids, including the presentation at relevant governance meetings</li><li>Delivery of training sessions to internal stakeholder groups</li><li>Support in PSDS delivery, analysis and reporting</li><li>Design and support for trust-wide communication plan including intranet content and social media campaigns</li><li>Job description development and interview support for new roles in this area</li><li>Policy review, feedback and updates</li><li>Support for the delivery of various awareness and educational campaigns across the Trust</li><li>Completion of a Trust-wide travel survey and its subsequent analysis</li><li>Delivery and design of additional sustainability training and inclusion of key sustainability responsibilities in staff induction packs</li></ul>
