<h3>The opportunity </h3>
<p>The organisation operates seven offices across the UK and employs over 1,700 staff, resulting in a significant operational carbon footprint. Given the risk a changing climate poses to human health, the GMC recognised the need to act on climate change but had not yet developed a formalised strategy or targets to address this. However, with Lexica’s guidance, the GMC established a target of net zero by 2040. </p><h3>Our approach</h3>
<p>Our <a href="https://www.lexica.co.uk/services/net-zero" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">net zero</a> experts formulated the strategy by starting a bespoke emissions baseline, in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol reporting standard. This enabled the identification of key carbon hot spots in the GMC’s existing operations, showing important areas to target in the action plan. Using this information, clear KPIs were set to help reduce the identified emissions. </p>
<p>The strategy also engaged the GMC’s environmental champions network, to gain valuable insight and understand the organisation's priorities, which helped highlight issues to be addressed in the action plan. The stakeholder engagement used surveys and workshops to gain staff feedback, and tailor Lexica’s work to the GMC.</p><h3>Our impact</h3>
<p>Following the success of our collaboration, Lexica has built a strong relationship with the GMC, and we continue to support them with achieving their sustainability agenda. Lexica is currently delivering a Green Travel Plan, providing further assistance with reporting against key criteria, and enhancement of the emissions reporting process through an improved data collection process.</p>
<p>The initial works, and now established collaboration between the GMC and Lexica, have ensured that the GMC are well informed on their climate impact, and with our support, they can take the required steps to meet their organisational targets. </p>
