However, demand for care outstripped the capacity of the existing facilities. Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) had ambitious plans to add capacity and deliver new models of care at many of its sites. For ELCH, this meant:<ul><li>a major reconfiguration of its Sky and Arctic wards</li><li>the creation of Snow Fox, a new children’s ambulatory unit</li><li>a long-term ventilation unit named Snow Leopard with additional specialties in neuro rehabilitation and sleep studies</li></ul>Lexica provided client-side project management and contract administration services across the entire programme from concept to completion. We were responsible for managing a strong design team, and for the procurement and management of ME Construction, the main contractor for the fit-out works. 
Our team led the commissioning and implementation of several feasibility studies to scrutinise shortlisted estate options. Working with a limited space on the constrained St Thomas’ Hospital Campus, where ELCH is located, we were instrumental in developing viable options for this development. 
We supported GSTT’s site masterplan for both St Thomas’ and London Bridge campuses, ensuring the Evelina expansion was at the forefront of the trust’s long-term vision.
Snow Leopard
The Snow Leopard ward provides 11 highly specialised patient bed spaces, catering to the needs of patients who, once stabilised, need a transition space that allows them to lead as normal a life as possible before being transferred home. 
Within seven months of the commencement of construction, Snow Leopard welcomed its first patient. That meant that an infection-control compliant temporary tunnel had to be used to deliver the second phase of construction, while providing access to the occupied area of the unit. 
Snow Fox
Midway through the Snow Leopard project, the clinical team at ELCH commissioned us to deliver a new children’s ambulatory unit called Snow Fox.
Designed to serve as a planned care ward, Snow Fox welcomes children and young people for non-emergency care, such as minor surgical procedures, diagnostic tests and scans across 19 treatment areas. 
Much like Snow Leopard, the building work had to be undertaken in a live campus environment at peak times, including near a highly sensitive centre for sleep studies. Thanks to our careful planning, engagement and close collaboration with the contractor and the clinical staff, we delivered the new ward in a record eight months, with minimal disruption to its neighbouring facilities. 
Down to the smallest details
To offset infrastructure challenges and financial risks, we kept costs low by awarding parallel ward refurbishment projects to a single main contractor. We maintained project independence by placing separate NEC Option A contracts which provided financial savings and helped maintain engagement between parties, as well as removing contractual dependencies.
Once construction was finished, we also supported in getting the new spaces operationally ready. Our team worked with the operational staff to manage the procurement and installation of medical equipment, as well as assisting with training.
On both projects, we wanted to integrate uplifting art into the treatment spaces and waiting rooms, creating a unique patient and visitor experience. We engaged with integrated art and interior design consultancy Art In Sight to make the spaces more memorable and welcoming.
