St Mary’s Hospital is a key site in the UK Government’s Health Infrastructure Plan, alongside Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust’s other hospitals: Charing Cross and Hammersmith. St Mary’s has provided exceptional care, education, and research for over 175 years, including its role as a major trauma centre for northwest London and the capital. 
Yet, the hospital’s buildings are showing their age. Some parts of the estate date back to 1845, and many facilities are over 70 years old. Over time, small expansions have led to complex pathways for patients and multiple entrances. Without a complete rebuild, there is a risk of disruption to patient care. 
 <h3>Our approach</h3>
Lexica was chosen to support the redevelopment of St Mary’s Hospital as part of the NHS New Hospitals Programme. We are working closely with the design team and the Trust to develop a site masterplan for a hospital with state-of-the-art facilities.
The new St Mary’s will offer:<ul><li>Urgent and emergency care</li><li>Adult and paediatric services</li><li>Planned and unplanned surgeries in 20 operating theatres</li><li>840 beds, including a 90-bed critical care unit</li><li>Obstetric, neonatal, and private patient services</li></ul>
Each year, the hospital will serve over 300,000 outpatient visits and continue as one of London’s four major trauma centres, playing a vital role in emergency response. The redevelopment will happen alongside the current hospital, creating unique logistical and planning challenges.<ul><li>Annual outpatient visits: 300,000+</li><li>Capacity: 840 beds, 20 theatres, and a 90-bed critical care unit</li><li>Major role: Trauma centre for emergency response</li></ul>
Lexica is managing multiple responsibilities in this redevelopment, including:<ul><li>Demand and capacity modelling in line with Integrated Care System (ICS) needs</li><li>Creating clinical and functional briefs and space schedules</li><li>Developing models of care and operational models</li><li>Developing a digital strategy for clinical and operational models</li><li>Planning for sustainability and facilities management</li><li>Engaging stakeholders to build a shared vision</li><li>Preparing detailed phasing and relocation plans</li></ul><h3>Our impact </h3>
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust provides acute care across three hospitals: St Mary’s, Hammersmith, and Charing Cross. Lexica is currently responsible for developing clinical and functional briefs and updating models of care across all three sites. We consider the entire ICS, ensuring alignment with the "Shaping a Healthier Future" plan for long-term sustainability.
With input from Lexica, demand and capacity models have been developed on an ICS level and refined for each hospital site. We continue to work with key stakeholders, including clinical teams, non-clinical staff, patient representatives, and the design team. Together, we are updating and refining the vision for the Trust’s three acute sites, ensuring services are rebalanced, and outdated infrastructure is replaced.
