The heatwaves we experienced during the past two summers brought climate adaptation to the forefront of our minds. Many Trusts were forced to cancel appointments due to IT systems failures and overheated AHUs and cooling systems.
The third National Adaptation Programme (NAP3) sets out the key actions for 2023 to 2028, and it requires the NHS to review and update its standards for facilities’ resilience planning by 2025, as well as support NHS Trusts and Integrated Care Boards in incorporating climate change adaptation within their Green Plans by 2027.
Lexica can develop Climate Change Adaptation Plans (CCAPs) for our clients. We believe the key aims should be to:<ul><li>Identify expected impacts of climate change on the Trust/ICBs, including relevance to patients and the community, but also infrastructure and operational assets</li><li>Build resilience to vulnerability and consider how adaptation can be bough into existing Trust strategies, pathways and policies</li><li>Raise awareness and promote action</li></ul>
Through our risk assessment process, we evaluate the climate-related risks to our client’s estate. These include, but are not limited to:<ul><li>Heat</li><li>Flooding</li><li>Air quality</li><li>Clinical service pressures</li><li>Emergency medicine</li><li>Pharmacy supply and storage</li><li>Utilities</li></ul>
When developing CCAPs, we believe it is important to see how risk changes over time against various climate scenarios. We have explored risk analysis platforms and analysed the climate exposure of critical infrastructure assets such as hospitals, medical clinics and other healthcare facilities across the UK.
Through developing a CCAP, Lexica provides clients with:<ul><li>A bespoke and data-driven climate change risk assessment</li><li>Local risk mapping of climate categories across the Trust’s estate</li><li>A resourced action plan to prepare for future extreme weather events</li><li>Stakeholder engagement to understand current measures, key challenges and raise awareness of climate change risks within the organisation</li></ul>
